Native Americans practiced self-mutilation in honor of a recently deceased close relative. This served as a demonstration of their love and respect for the newly deceased. This was typical of the Great Plains Indians.[1]

They should not make their heads bald+ or shave off the fringe of their beard or make cuts on their body.
